The fear of going out into emptiness

One feels great anxiety and confusion, but also patience in fear before the leap.  One knows that others have jumped before.  Emotionally one knows the beginning is a bridge, which was built long before.  But at first one has to step out into the emptiness, before one can feel the bridge under one's feet.
